Roadstead Montessori High School students are working to transcribe the ship manifests of ships that carried enslaved people from Norfolk to New Orleans through the coast-wise domestic slave trade. Although Norfolk’s Custom’s House records are no longer extant due to a series of fires during the nineteenth century, many of the ship manifests were sent to the main Custom’s House office in Washington, DC and are on file at the National Archives. Still others are available through the New Orleans Custom’s House records. These ship manifests list the names of enslaved people, the slave trader who transported them to New Orleans, and often the name of their seller in Virginia and prior residence.
